During the fall I finally got time to make some projects on my own, and also got the opportunity to work with a company using a laser cutter. I therefore started to think of things we normally do in paper, as my approach is that anything that can be done in paper can also be made in lasercut metal.

So my first project ended up being a collection of wall clocks, inspired by the paper snowflakes that we used to make when we were kids. They come in 4 different colors and models, and are all for sale. Just send me an e-mail for more info, or visit Almia Heminredning in Härnösand.

Scandi chair is another multifunctional piece of furniture where we've tried ti create a chair that can be used in many different situations and users. By creating a storage box in the seat, and a backrest that allows hanging of both coats and bags, it is a chair that could fit into both public spaces, in an office or at home.

Designed by ELJ Design
Emma Nilsson, Johanna Westin & Lisa Frode

The chair is being produced and sold by Plusfunction

ELJ design is the name of the company I started together with Emma Nilsson and Lisa Frode in the beginning of 2011. It all started in the fall of 2010 when we decided to do a project together, which later on led to a collaboration with the swedish company PlusFunction.

By starting this company we haven't only learned what it is to work as design consultants, but also how it is to run a small business, and we've had to deal with everything from economics, to PR and legal issues.

Tekné Vietnam is my master project in industrial design at Lund University, Sweden. I spent roughly 3 months in Hanoi, Vietnam, working close with manufacturers to investigate in the possibilities and difficulties for me as a Swedish designer to work there, and developed products together with them by combining my skills in design with their craftsmanship.

I’ve used locally sourced materials and looked at optimizing production methods and minimizing wastage, and at the same time it was important to maintain the traditional methods and techniques for creating products. I chose to make the products for the European market since these materials are much more suitable for the European and northern climate because they don't stand that much humidity.

The result is a collection of small furniture pieces and home products in sea grass and rattan including lamps, storage baskets and a foldable tray table in rattan and some different carpets made from woven sea grass. I wanted to work with traditional techniques and products, but to create interesting shapes and features. I wanted the products to be both functional, and beautiful to look at, so for the lamps for example I was aiming for them to look good both in daylight and in the dark, which meant I could work both with the joinery and to play with the shadows it would create when lit. For the table instead I've worked with creating structure, and by making a tray table with a handle I could really emphasize the lightness of the material, by not only making a light product, but also make it easy to move around.

The products will hopefully work as an inspiration for the manufacturers, showing them that it is possible to create products that are adapted to other markets, and also be an eye opener for the rest of the world, showing the possibilities of production in Vietnam, and showing the beauty of these raw materials.

During the fall of 2012 I was working a lot with art again, and started to get back into watercolor and used that to create both post cards and textile prints, mainly focused on bird prints.

I've always found beauty in organisms and viruses looked at in a microscope, and decided to use that as a starting point for a set of wallpaper patterns. I wanted to use these strange and colourful things to create patterns that could just aswell have been made with roses or other flowers.

Over the years I've also been very fascinated with patterns. These are some examples of what I've done for wallpapers and textiles.

These are a few different suggestions on a graphic profile/business cards I made for a Vietnamese company in 2012. As it is a company working with international clients we thought it was important to include some element that is typical for Vietnam, and that is why I included the vietnamese hat in the design. I also find it really simple and it work very well graphically.

I really do enjoy relaxing with drawing sometimes, and these are some of the christmas cards i drew for christmas 2011.

In a collaboration with NASA we started out this project by looking at the different ways the astronauts are interacting with each other on the space ship. Many of the men and women had a great interest in space exploration already as children, the long journey of becoming an astronaut started with a fascination during those early years.

We decided to create a game that can be used as an educational school for children and school classes between the ages 8 and 12 years, mainly because it is during these years in school that Swedish children are supposed to learn about space, and also because they can normally read at that age, and can play the game on their own, or with supervision.

The final result is a space game where the main structure is to follow a path that takes the player from earth to Mars and back, through answering different questions about space and life as an astronaut.

A big part of the project was working with the graphic design, we wanted to make it different from many of the other space games, that often are "star wars" inspired. When it came to color choices we wanted to make it interesting for the children to use, and at the same time it should be easy for them to separate the different colors, and to easily understand the meaning of them.
